Sculpture
My training as a stone mason and architectural carver taught me all about shaping and sculpting stone in three dimensions, and my interest in experimenting and exploring digital design has opened up the possibility of working with other materials such as cast iron, glass or steel.
Making sculpture gives me the opportunity to express myself through my artwork in a different way to working on a commission. I can explore form and aesthetics in a more organic spontaneous way. My sculptural work ranges from large carved monoliths to abstract pieces for garden or landscape, to bowls and smaller more intimate figurative and tactile pieces for the home.
Some of these can be found for sale in my shop.

Stone sculpture
Each stone has its own feel to it, its own unique qualities. Welsh slate for example is more laminated in its structure and tends to want to split naturally along certain planes, and it will need to be shaped more carefully, whereas other materials will exhibit different qualities. Some stones are hard and can be polished whereas others are soft and more earthy. I feel it is rewarding to explore the tactile nature and surface finishes possible in different stones by employing a range of different chiselling techniques as well as rubbing and polishing.
other materials
As I have created my own True Type fonts, I have been able to create vector artwork using these fonts and these designs can then be used to work with CNC laser cutting machines and sandblasting, for example producing laser-cut stainless steel lettering or deeply sandblasted lettering and pictorial work in glass or by having MDF moulds made with CNC routing processes which can then be used as patterns for cast iron pieces. Each of these materials has its own properties and qualities that make it suitable for different applications.
My sculptural influences are varied, I am inspired by all sorts of art including African carving, Indian Classical carving, Aztec sculpture, Isamu Noguchi, Picasso, Eric Gill, Barbara Hepworth, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Peter Randall-Page, I could go on………
